Captions (or not)
Does it help to give a caption to a photo? Or does it hinder? It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Perhaps that's true. But which words? And does it matter?
Consider the photograph below. What word or words would you give it? Not merely to be clever, or funny, or both. But to express what it means? Or, to put it another way, what story does it tell?
It is a photograph of seven small boats in a harbour. It looks cold. The sky and the general absence of colour suggest a very early hour. Those who know the north coast of Ireland will readily identify the location as Ballintoy Harbour. Is there more to be said? We know what it is a photograph of: but what is it about?
Let me know! (And feel free to be clever and funny.)
